Pete Postma and Sons Dairy has become the first dairy in California to receive verified carbon credits for methane avoidance from flocculant-assisted manure separation. The credits were generated using LWR’s First Wave solid-liquid separation system, installed with funding from the 2023 Dairy Plus Program and supported by Figure 8 Environmental.
The project completed the full carbon credit cycle, from installation through verification and payment, using an established protocol. The credits were sold through 3Degrees to a buyer sourcing milk from a climate-smart producer, and the initial payment has been confirmed. This marks the first time a high-value, non-digester manure treatment project in California has successfully monetized avoided methane through carbon markets.

MANURE AS A SERVICE (MaaS): SUBSCRIPTION BASED MANURE MANAGEMENT

Building on the success of the Postma project, eleven additional California dairies are moving forward with advanced solid-liquid separation systems funded through the 2023 and 2024 Dairy Plus Program. These projects include both raw manure and post-digester sites and are supported by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
All projects will deploy LWR’s First Wave system with deployment and technical support from Figure 8 Environmental. The Dairy Plus Program is providing approximately $58 million in funding this round for manure treatment approaches that go beyond traditional digesters, with projects designed to reduce methane emissions, improve nutrient capture, and support off-farm nutrient export.
Installations are expected to begin over the coming months, with systems anticipated to be operational within the next 6 to 18 months.

This is actually one of the topics I’ll be digging into next month on the Successful Farming podcast. We’ll be talking about how manure and wastewater systems are evolving, what turning manure into revenue really looks like in practice, and how data, controls, and nutrient management all fit together on a working farm.
I’ve also recently been filming new video content around these same themes on-farm. This work is part of a broader project supported by Emissions Reduction Alberta, focused on using real data and controls to reduce emissions while improving how wastewater systems perform in day-to-day farm operations.
